Our Values

We have 5 core school values, which underpin the behaviours we expect our children to demonstrate to everyone in The Gateway community. These values are promoted by all school staff and are displayed in the hall, where each class has created a school value display. Our assembly themes are often linked to these values.

Our values are very important to us. They ensure that pupils and staff alike are all striving towards the same goals. We celebrate pupils displaying these values during our whole school Celebration assembly on a Friday.  The pupils are awarded stars which are displayed outside the hall to celebrate our school values in 'action'.
 

The DFE expects all schools to play a part in preparing pupils positively for life in modern Britain and promoting the fundamental British values of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty and mutual respect for and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs and those without faith.

At The Gateway we actively promote the British values through our school ethos and culture, our curriculum (including RE and PSHE) and by engaging our pupils in wider curriculum events throughout the year.

What do the British values look like in our school?

Democracy 

Pupil voice is embedded in the life of the school. 

For example:    

• Peer/self - assessment
• Friday 'Learning Talk' sessions where children evaluate and review learning completed over the week. 
• Voting in the classroom
• Voting for class responsibilities, setting golden time activities in September, debate questions, in maths handling data, persuasive writing
• School councillors and debate committees
• Questionnaires - about Artsmark, after visits, visitors, special events     

Pupils are listened to and are expected to listen to and respect the views of others.

The Rule of Law 

An understanding of British Law is developed through our curriculum and assemblies.

Our Golden Rules ensure our community is a safe and respectful environment for all, promotes positive relationships and excellent behaviour.

• Each class displays the Golden Rules and knows how they apply in all areas of the school
• Playground games - children develop and agree the rules.
• Visits from PCSO, Community Warden etc.

Individual Liberty and mutual respect

Our pupils are encouraged to make choices in a safe and supportive environment.

For example:

• Topic starters - children contribute to planning (what do we know/what do we want to find out/how)
• Our approach to behaviour management - giving children choices through conflict resolution processes
• Choice over after school clubs - link with club questionnaires
• Through discussions in PSHE/Circle Time/ JIGSAW programme
• Actively demonstrating our school values - whole school celebration display
• Building Learning Power impacting on positive behaviours for learning
• Buddy systems - Hall heroes, Play leaders, circle of friends

Respect and tolerance of different beliefs and faiths

Through our curriculum and special events children are taught to understand and appreciate the diverse culture in our society.

This is explored through:

• Assemblies
• Discovery RE
• Involvement in local events e.g. St Georges Day Parade
• Participation in national and world events - diversity workshops, religious festivals
