Christophe's Story

By Nicki Cornwell

Woodpeckers have been listening to this story of a young Rwandan refugee now living in the UK. Christophe is having trouble getting used to his new school, new language and new life. Life has been very lonely for him. His teacher persuades Christophe to share his story with his classmates -  the spoken story fills the air and his classmates are spellbound. Woodpeckers have use role-play and drama to explore this story and empathise with the characters. They were then eager to share their own personal stories through descriptive writing and story telling too!

A Viking Raid on The Gateway!

This term, Woodpeckers have enjoyed learning about the Vikings. They particularly enjoyed a visit from 'Thorgill the Viking' where they had a great opportunity to use role play and drama to further explore the Viking way of life and explore Viking myths and legends!

Anansi The Spider

Woodpeckers have been learning about traditional stories from contrasting cultures. After learning about Beatrix Potter and her traditional tales of Peter Rabbit, they have enjoyed reading this engaging traditional story from Ghana, 'Anansi The Spider'. They have enjoyed using the colourful illustrations in this book to learn about African art. They then used oil pastels and collage to create their own character for the story in the same style of art.
