Light and Shadows!
This term, the Year 3 Swallows have been busy bringing light into our classroom as we explored our new topic, Light and Shadows!
We kicked things off with the lovely story The Owl Who Was Afraid of the Dark, which helped us think differently about the dark and what makes it special. Then our science brains got to work! We experimented with different light sources, investigated how shadows appear, and even discovered how their size and shape can change.
The children shone in their homework too—creating brilliant projects, including some very stylish sunglasses designs to help protect us on sunny days!
Opposites Attract
Also during this term, Swallows have been diving into the fascinating world of magnets! Our learning was inspired by Ted Hughes’ classic story The Iron Man. After reading the opening chapters, we wrote a variety of texts, including a diary entry from the farmer’s point of view when the Iron Man first appeared. We also created detailed character descriptions for our own metal-based creatures and imagined how they might challenge the Iron Man himself.
In science, we investigated how magnets behave, explored which materials are magnetic, and learned all about non-contact forces. We ended the topic with an exciting classroom escape room, where the Swallows used their new knowledge to solve puzzles and crack clues.
Swallows also worked hard during art, mixing what they know of light and dark to create a fantastic collection of Iron Man portraits, with a focus on using different pressures of the pencil to create different shades.
