Term 1 - Super Shapes!
Within Maths this term, we have been looking at 2D and 3D shapes. We have noted where we find these in real life and discussed vocabulary such as sides, equal, vertices, edges and faces. At the start of learning about 3D shapes children built a variety of shapes using lolly sticks and plasticine. We have practically sorted shapes due to their properties and then used shapes to solve problems.
Term 3 - The Great Fire of London Workshop
Kingfishers enjoyed a visit from Freshwater Company and were transported back to 1666 to experience the Great Fire of London and meet significant figures from the event. The scene was set with the children imagining they were bakers, market traders and factory workers chanting on the streets of London. Following this we met Thomas Farriner, the baker who started the fire, and discovered how it began and what caused the fire to spread so quickly. We imagined how people fleeing the fire would've felt and what the people of London had to do in order to stop the fire from spreading further. As well as learning about the event, we met Samuel Pepys and King Charles II who were important figures during the event.
Becoming Bakers!
Following our learning on Thomas Farriner, Kingfishers became bakers! We followed the steps and measurements on a recipe and ensured we were safe by cleaning surfaces and our hands. We discussed what yeast is and why it's important for bread making. We demonstrated good teamwork, turn-taking and patience when combining the ingredients and we all had a go at kneading the dough.
We enjoyed tasting the final result fresh out of the oven.
Oracy
To kickstart our school oracy journey, Kingfishers' termly oracy presentation task was to interview Samuel Pepys about his experience in the Great Fire of London and his life. We watched a Newsround interview with children asking the Prime Minister important questions and we discussed how the questions were significant to our world and of importance. We also observed how the children were showing they were attentive listeners through their body language, turn taking with talk, eye contact and listening to each other's points.
We wrote questions we'd like to ask Samuel Pepys about his early life and historical events he had lived through and been involved in - The Great Plague and The Great Fire of London. In our groups, one of us pretended to be Samuel Pepys whilst everyone else took on the role of interviewers. We listened to questions, thought about our body language, used sentence stems to form our responses and responded politely to questions we didn't know the answer to.
Term 3 - Maths
Kingfishers have been developing their understanding of subtraction in maths this term. To further their understanding, we have embedded the use of practical resources such as base 10 and place value counters. The children worked in pairs to practise subtraction questions where they needed to exchange one 10 for ten 1s and then we moved on to being able to draw these out to solve ourselves. In shape, space and measure we have been learning how to measure in cm, we worked in pairs to measure the pieces of tape on the table and then checked each other’s work. Next term, we will be continuing measuring in cm and m, comparing and ordering lengths as well as solving problems involving lengths.
