Geography
Introduction
At the Gateway Primary Academy, we recognise the importance of a high-quality geography curriculum for all of our pupils. Our geography topics form an important part of our topic based curriculum and have been chosen to inspire our pupils. Our geography curriculum covers a diverse range of locations for example: Africa, the rainforest and the Lake District. It also covers the key physical and human processes and gives our pupils the understanding of the formation and use of a range of landscapes and environments.
National Curriculum
Our geography curriculum fulfils the following aims from the National Curriculum:
- develop contextual knowledge of the location of globally significant places – both terrestrial and marine – including their defining physical and human characteristics and how these provide a geographical context for understanding the actions of processes
- understand the processes that give rise to key physical and human geographical features of the world, how these are interdependent and how they bring about spatial variation and change over time.
- Our curriculum ensures our pupils are competent in the geographical skills needed to:
- collect, analyse and communicate with a range of data gathered through experiences of fieldwork that deepen their understanding of geographical processes
- Interpret a range of sources of geographical information, including maps, diagrams, globes, aerial photographs and Geographical Information Systems (GIS)
- Communicate geographical information in a variety of ways, including through maps, numerical and quantitative skills and writing at length.
Global learning
Our geography curriculum has a strong element of global learning and all of our units contain opportunities for our pupils to reflect on humans’ impact on a global scale and what we can do to change it. An example of this is during the Year 5 rainforest unit, where the children explore the issue of deforestation and write persuasive letters and think about their choices. In Year 1, during the seaside unit, children explore our impact on the animals in the sea and how we can look after our environment.
How will your child be introduced to Geography in the early years?

Geography is introduced in the EYFS through the different topics explored each term. Through the curriculum area of Understanding of the World, children develop an awareness of where they are: both at home, in school and the transitions between coming and going between and within these areas. They become more aware of what is around them and their close environment. Using the outdoor area allows our pupils to have a close relationship with the seasons and weather. They use a wide range of resources to explore the world around them such as props, maps, photographs and Google Street View. |
