At The Gateway Primary Academy, we teach children how to stay safe on and around the railway.
Railways are extremely dangerous places. Trains travel faster than many people realise and cannot stop quickly. Even being close to railway tracks can put lives at risk.
Important Railway Safety Rules
Never Go On The Tracks
Railway tracks are not playgrounds or shortcuts.
Children should:
- Never trespass on railway land.
- Never walk along tracks.
- Never climb fences.
- Never cross tracks anywhere except authorised crossings.
Trains Are Quicker Than They Look
Many accidents happen because people underestimate:
- The speed of trains.
- How long it takes a train to stop.
- How quiet modern trains can be.
Always stay behind safety barriers and platform lines.
Avoid Distractions
When near a railway:
- Remove headphones.
- Put away mobile phones.
- Stay alert.
- Follow instructions and warning signs.
Overhead Power Lines
Many railway lines have overhead electric cables carrying thousands of volts of electricity.
Never:
- Throw objects onto railway lines.
- Climb railway structures.
- Attempt to retrieve items from tracks.
Level Crossings
Always:
- Stop.
- Look.
- Listen.
- Follow signals and barriers.
Never attempt to cross when warning lights are flashing or barriers are closing.
