In June 2019, a team of year five and six children travelled to Holcombe Hockey Club in Rochester to represent Dartford in the Kent School Games hockey final. The competition was of a very high standard and the children played extremely well finishing in 10th place overall.
As usual the children’s behaviour on the day demonstrated the values of the school games: Passion, Self-belief, Respect, Honesty, Teamwork and Determination.
After our success in last year’s Boccia tournaments, The Gateway were excited to send a Boccia team to Fairfield Sports Centre to compete in the first of this year’s tournaments. Three children from Year 4, 5 and 6 played against six other Dartford schools. Boccia, pronounced ‘Bot-cha’, is a precision ball sport played indoors. It is similar to bowls and pétanque where the aim of the game is to get your ball closer to the jack than your opponent. The children worked extremely well as a team, showed great sportsmanship throughout the competition and were delighted to take second place. We are already looking forward to the next tournament to be held in the Spring term.
2018 - 2019
One of the biggest athletics competitions of the year happened this term at North West Kent College. The Key Stage 2 indoor athletics event gives children the opportunity to participate in a number of events to gain points for their team. These events include: relays, standing long jump and high jump, triple jump, chest pass, speed bounce and javelin.
The children put in some exceptional performances and displayed passion, determination and great teamwork. The competition was extremely high this year and we finished 8th in the lower Key Stag2 competition and 4th in the upper Key Stage 2 competition.
Here is what the children thought:
“I particularly liked the standing long jump and working as a team during the day.” Alice
“In the indoor athletics I enjoyed how there was always a race on the go. I learnt that it wasn’t all about how you did; it was about how the team did as well.” Charlie
“During the athletics I feel the whole team cooperated well. My favourite part was when we did the obstacle race (the first race) since it was full of energy and excitement.” Olivia-M
“I mostly enjoyed the 2x2 relay race because you had to work as a team and pass the baton.” Alex
2017 - 2018
The children at The Gateway continue to have a very successful year in sport. Great success has been had by the Handball team and Cricket team who represented Dartford at the Kent School Games Final in Canterbury.
In addition, the boys football team have been crowned Champions of Dartford in the first Dartford FA Cup competition as well as winning the Small schools Swanley tournament. Our first ever Boccia team also won both festivals held at Fairfield Sports Centre.
During all the competitions and tournaments the children participated in, they displayed the values of the school and the values of the School Games: Passion, Self-belief, Respect, Honesty, Teamwork and Determination. The children are often complemented on actively displaying these attributes by staff from other schools.
